The Bunion Derby, as it came to be known, was an amazing feat that began on March 4, 1928 when 199 runners departed Los Angeles for New York City. The runner to finish the race received $25,000. Fifty-five runners made it to New York City eighty-five days later. The book pulls you along, sweating and feeling the pain of the runners.
